Ebola outbreak in DRC leads to France's first case and new vaccine funding
France confirmed its first Ebola case on June 1, 2026, in a humanitarian doctor who had recently returned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The patient was transferred to a specialist hospital, placed in isolation and is being closely monitored, with authorities saying there is no sign of local transmission.
The same outbreak, driven by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus strain, prompted the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to allocate up to US$8.6 million to fast‑track three vaccine candidates, including an Oxford‑based ChAdOx1 vaccine. Funding will support pre‑clinical work, Phase 1 trial preparation, virus‑seed production and manufacturing of clinical‑grade doses at the Serum Institute of India. The move aims to fill the gap of having no licensed vaccines for this strain and to accelerate development under the global “100‑Days Mission.”
