DR Congo Ebola outbreak tops 930 deaths as spread accelerates

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s latest Ebola outbreak has killed at least 930 people, with 37 deaths recorded in a single 24‑hour period, bringing the confirmed case count to 2,344. The Bundibugyo strain, which has no approved vaccine or treatment, is spreading faster than any previous outbreak, now affecting five eastern provinces, chiefly Ituri.

Health authorities report 724 patients remain in isolation while response efforts are hampered by security concerns: at least 12 attacks on health facilities and teams have been documented since May, and many health workers have staged strikes over unpaid wages. At least 36 infected health workers have died.

The World Health Organization has declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern and warned that official figures may underestimate the true toll. The epidemic has prompted travel restrictions from the United States and Canada and the medical evacuation of two U.S. citizens to Germany for treatment. Uganda, a neighboring country, has reported no new cases and is nearing virus‑free status.
