DR Congo Ebola outbreak claims 930 lives, over 2,300 cases

The Democratic Republic of Congo's Ebola outbreak has killed at least 930 people, with 37 deaths recorded in a single 24‑hour period. Health authorities report 2,344 confirmed cases, making it the fastest‑growing Ebola outbreak on record. The virus is the Bundibugyo variant, for which no approved vaccine or treatment exists.

Five eastern provinces are affected, with Ituri accounting for over 90% of cases and 80% of deaths. At least 12 attacks on health facilities have been documented, and 36 infected health workers have died. Staff in Ituri staged a strike over unpaid wages, complicating response efforts. The Ministry of Health says 724 patients remain in isolation, and the World Health Organization warns that more than 80% of new infections are emerging from unknown transmission chains.

International dimensions include the evacuation of two U.S. citizens to Germany for medical care and the operation of a U.S.‑run Ebola quarantine center in Kenya despite a Kenyan court injunction. WHO officials describe the outbreak as the third‑largest Ebola event ever and note its unprecedented speed of spread.
