Ebola outbreak in DRC spurs global travel restrictions and health alerts

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and neighboring Uganda are experiencing a surge in cases of the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, with confirmed infections exceeding 1,100 and dozens of deaths. The World Health Organization has announced a £386 million response plan to contain the outbreak and support affected countries.

Countries have taken varying protective measures. The United States has imposed temporary entry bans, intensified screening, and redirected passengers from the affected areas to designated airports. European Union members are maintaining heightened epidemiological surveillance while describing the risk to the general population as very low. Mexico has tightened its own health controls for travelers from the region. Meanwhile, the outbreak has claimed the lives of at least seven health workers, underscoring vulnerabilities in frontline protection.

The virus remains without an approved vaccine or specific treatment, prompting calls for international assistance to supply protective equipment and bolster contact‑tracing efforts.
