DRC Ebola outbreak and Kenya quarantine dispute
Overview
The Bundibugyo‑strain Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo remains active. WHO operates a 100‑bed treatment centre in Bunia and reports a case‑fatality ratio of about 30‑50 %. Transmission occurs only through direct contact with bodily fluids, and the incubation period is 2–21 days. No specific vaccine or therapy is available; patients receive supportive care while health workers use N‑95 respirators, face shields, gloves and fluid‑impermeable gowns. Experts caution that media coverage can amplify public fear.
Public‑transport operators have halted services between Bunia, Mongbwalu and Aru for more than a week, and commercial flights between Bunia and Aru have been suspended after Aru reported seven confirmed cases, four fatal, with additional deaths in nearby Aungba. Provincial deputy Antoine Mopepe praised the restrictions and urged other districts to follow suit.
In Kenya, the Ministry of Health halted work on the U.S.–funded 50‑bed Ebola quarantine facility at Laikipia Air Base on 24 June following a court injunction and activist criticism over transparency, environmental impact and community participation. Satellite images later showed heavy machinery still on site, indicating incomplete compliance. The United States had announced the plan on 28 May, pledging $13.5 million and deploying over 30 Public Health Service members. Kenyan courts blocked the project and found Health Minister Aden Duale in contempt for defying the injunction, while protests in Nanyuki became confrontational. Critics described the effort as a breach of sovereignty and neocolonialism.
Globally, Ebola remains a high‑mortality threat with roughly 15‑16 thousand deaths since 1976; fruit bats are natural reservoirs. International health agencies continue to monitor the disease and pursue vaccine research. No further developments have been reported since the last update.
