Ebola outbreak expands in Democratic Republic of the Congo
The Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus is rapidly expanding across the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. While cases in the primary epicenter of Ituri province have recently seen a decline, the virus is spreading aggressively into neighboring provinces, including North Kivu and Haut-Uele.
According to data from the Africa CDC and the Congolese government, the outbreak has reached 6,843 confirmed cases and 3,310 deaths. In North Kivu, new cases recently doubled from 165 to 381 over a three-week period. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the scale of this epidemic could potentially surpass the devastating 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak.
Containment efforts are being severely hindered by regional insecurity, large-scale population displacement, and strikes by healthcare workers. Armed conflicts, such as those involving M23 rebels, have further obstructed medical surveillance and care in certain areas.
In response, the Congolese government has begun vaccinating frontline health workers with the Ervebo vaccine. Meanwhile, clinical trials are ongoing to develop an authorized vaccine specifically for the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is currently no approved specific treatment or vaccine.
