Ebola outbreak spreads across Democratic Republic of the Congo

An Ebola outbreak is spreading across the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), characterized by rapid growth and complex humanitarian challenges. As of September 18, the outbreak has recorded 7,614 confirmed cases and 3,676 deaths, representing a case fatality rate of 48%. This scale of infection in its first 18 weeks significantly exceeds the rate of the 2014 West Africa outbreak during the same period.

The virus is appearing in new provinces, including a recent Bundibugyo virus case in Sud-Ubangi. While contact follow-up rates remain high at approximately 87-88%, the response faces significant hurdles. The outbreak is unfolding amidst ongoing conflict, food insecurity, and displacement, which undermine prevention and response efforts.

Experts emphasize that containment requires more than medical intervention; it necessitates building community trust to combat misinformation. There is a critical need for investment in women leaders and local organizations to reach at-risk populations and address the gendered impacts of the crisis.
