Ebola outbreak in DR Congo spreads rapidly with Bundibugyo strain
A rapid Ebola epidemic driven by the Bundibugyo strain is spreading through the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, claiming over 2,000 lives and involving more than 4,300 confirmed cases. The outbreak is described by humanitarian officials as the fastest ever recorded, with deaths occurring at a rate of approximately one person every 30 minutes.
Health authorities face significant challenges in containment. In the Ituri province, surveillance teams report that 60% to 70% of new cases are being identified in individuals who were not previously monitored as contacts. This breakdown in contact tracing is exacerbated by a lack of vaccines for this specific strain, shortages of protective equipment, and local instability.
The virus has already reached six provinces, raising fears of its spread to the capital, Kinshasa. While Kinshasa has prepared isolation facilities, the rapid transmission rate remains a major concern. Additionally, there is growing alarm regarding the potential for the virus to cross borders into South Sudan, as confirmed cases are located near the border regions of Ituri and Haut-Uele.
