Ebola outbreak surges in eastern DRC as cases spike
The Ebola epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo, first declared on 15 May in the Ituri province, has spread to five eastern provinces—Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut‑Uele and Tshopo. By 30 July the World Health Organization reported 3,748 confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths, a case‑fatality rate of about 44 %. In the most recent week, 567 new infections and 296 additional deaths were recorded, the highest weekly totals since the outbreak began, and 44 health‑care workers have died.
In response, the humanitarian response is being scaled up. International Medical Corps, with United Nations support, is opening a 100‑bed Ebola treatment centre in Ituri, the largest ever built in the country, alongside an 80‑bed facility near Mongbwalu and a transit centre at the Kigonze displacement site to speed case identification.
Separately, motorbike‑taxi drivers in Beni (North Kivu) organized a city‑wide awareness caravan on 5 August, supported by the World Health Organization, to educate the public and their peers about preventive measures, citing their high exposure risk while transporting patients and the community.
