Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda declared global health emergency
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment. In the DRC, as of August 10, there have been 4,449 confirmed cases and 2,061 deaths, representing a fatality rate of 46.3%.
WHO leadership has warned that the current trajectory could make this one of the deadliest Ebola outbreaks in history, potentially exceeding 10,000 deaths. While Uganda has not reported new cases since June 21, the virus remains a significant threat due to regional instability and limited access to medical care in affected areas.
Global responses are intensifying. Taiwan has implemented visa restrictions for residents of the DRC and Uganda, while Mauritius has introduced enhanced sanitary protocols and potential 21-day quarantines for travelers from affected regions. In Chile, the O’Higgins region has conducted specialized training for its health networks to prepare for potential cases. Meanwhile, the UK's MHRA has approved human trials for a Bundibugyo-specific vaccine being developed by the University of Oxford.
