US Ebola patient arrives in Frankfurt for treatment

A United States citizen infected with the Bundibugyo variant of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo was admitted to the special isolation unit of Frankfurt University Hospital in the early hours of Monday. Health officials said the patient’s condition is stable and that the unit is completely separated from the rest of the hospital, eliminating any risk to other patients or the public.

The case follows a first US doctor who was treated in Berlin in May and released after two weeks. The Congo outbreak has risen to about 1,900 confirmed cases and over 700 deaths, with the Bundibugyo strain lacking an approved vaccine or therapy. Germany operates seven high‑containment isolation stations (Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich, Stuttgart) that can treat up to a few dozen patients and require roughly 50 staff members per case.
