Ebola remains a global health threat despite low transmission

Ebola, first identified in 1976 near the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has caused between 15,000 and 16,000 deaths over the past five decades. The virus is among the deadliest known, with mortality rates that can reach 90% when untreated, but its spread is limited because infected individuals often die before transmitting the disease widely. Natural reservoirs are fruit bats, which can pass the virus to other wildlife and occasionally to humans through accidental contact.

Public‑health officials in Canada are monitoring Ebola alongside hantavirus because both present with similar early symptoms such as fever and muscle pain. Canadian protocols stress strict isolation, personal protective equipment, and laboratory testing (serology and PCR). Although vaccines and antivirals are under development, treatment remains largely supportive. The Bundibugyo variant currently circulating shows a mortality range of 30‑50%.

Italian scientists have contributed to Ebola research, including work on non‑pathogenic viral strains for vaccine development. Experts emphasize that controlling Ebola requires integrated strategies that address human health, animal reservoirs, and ecosystem interactions to prevent future outbreaks.
