EC Pruszków transitions from coal to biomass
The Pruszków heating plant (EC Pruszków) has reached a major milestone in its decarbonization efforts with the installation of three biomass boilers. This project marks a significant shift for the facility, which has relied exclusively on coal for 112 years.
Each of the three new boilers has a thermal capacity of up to 14.9 MW. Once operational, the new installation will allow for the decommissioning of two coal boilers. This transition is expected to reduce CO2 emissions from electricity and heat production by 60 percent, dropping from 368 kg/MWh in 2024 to 147 kg/MWh by 2029.
The heating plant provides heat to approximately 65 percent of the residents in Pruszków and the surrounding areas. The general contractor, UNIPEB SA, is responsible for the installation, which includes fuel systems, biomass storage, and flue gas cleaning and condensation systems. The biomass boiler plant is scheduled to be commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2027.
