Polish heating plants transitioning to biomass
Overview
Heating plants in Poland are transitioning from coal to biomass to reduce CO2 emissions and enhance energy security.
In Wałbrzych, Przedsiębiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej (PEC) S.A. opened a modern biomass plant costing nearly 87 million PLN. Utilizing forest residues like wood chips, the facility aims to serve over 45,000 residents and reduce annual coal consumption from approximately 19,500 tons to between 5,000 and 6,000 tons, cutting CO2 emissions by over 60 percent.
Similarly, the Pruszków heating plant (EC Pruszków) is undergoing decarbonization through the installation of three biomass boilers with a thermal capacity of up to 14.9 MW each. This project, managed by contractor UNIPEB SA, is intended to allow for the decommissioning of two coal boilers and is expected to reduce CO2 emissions from 368 kg/MWh in 2024 to 147 kg/MWh by 2029. The installation is scheduled for commissioning in the fourth quarter of 2027.
