ECCO Recycling ordered to stop waste storage following Calgary landfill fire

A Calgary court has granted an injunction against ECCO Recycling and Energy Corp., ordering the company to stop storing dry waste and remove unauthorized materials from its recycling site. Justice James Eamon ruled that the company has demonstrated a “continuous disregard” for local laws following a fire that has been smouldering at the southeast Calgary site since September 6.

ECCO Recycling was previously convicted of breaching the city’s Land Use Bylaw in early 2025 and was fined $30,000, a penalty that remains unpaid. While the current injunction applies to the recycling site, Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas noted that the city is pursuing a separate legal action regarding the company’s landfill site.

The ongoing fire has prompted a health advisory for residents downwind of the facility. In response to concerns over smoke drifting into nearby communities, Calgary officials have requested that the province of Alberta release detailed air quality data. The Alberta environment minister’s office has stated it will release this data as soon as possible.
