EchoStar's Dish DBS emerges from bankruptcy with $4.3 billion debt reduction
Dish DBS, the communications unit of EchoStar, has emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy after a prepackaged restructuring deal. The process successfully reduced the company’s outstanding debt from approximately $8.75 billion to $4.4 billion.
The reorganization, which includes Dish Network and Sling TV, became effective following a federal bankruptcy judge's approval. The plan involved the full repayment of 7.75 percent senior notes due in July 2026 and a partial early repayment of 5.25 percent senior secured notes due in December 2026. The restructuring was supported by more than 88 percent of lenders.
While the television and streaming businesses have exited bankruptcy, Dish Wireless remains under Chapter 11 protection. The wireless division continues to face complications due to unresolved obligations to tower companies and infrastructure providers, including a $3.5 billion claim asserted by Crown Castle. EchoStar is currently winding down its facilities-based wireless network following the sale of spectrum assets to AT&T and SpaceX.
