ECLAC session: Abinader calls for regional cooperation and growth

At the 41st session of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader called for enhanced regional cooperation to address geopolitical and technological shifts. He noted that while the region possesses a market of over 660 million people, intra-regional trade accounts for only 14% of total exports, highlighting a significant opportunity for integration.

ECLAC Executive Secretary José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs issued a warning regarding the 2030 Agenda, stating that at the current pace, only 19% of Sustainable Development Goals will be met in the region. He emphasized that high, sustained economic growth is a prerequisite for social progress, including poverty reduction and infrastructure development.

President Abinader also presented the Meta RD 2036 strategy, which aims to double the Dominican Republic's real economy over the next decade through an average annual growth rate of approximately 6%. The initiative targets the creation of 1.7 million jobs, tripling the average salary, and eliminating extreme poverty. He highlighted that the country's foreign direct investment exceeded US$5,000 million in 2025.
