Ecological restoration projects launched in Krakow region
Environmental restoration initiatives have begun in the Krakow area to improve water quality and biodiversity. In the Prądnik River, a project led by WWF Poland and the Bonneville Environmental Foundation, in collaboration with Wody Polskie, aims to restore ecological continuity. By the end of 2028, the project will remove concrete barriers that currently prevent fish migration between the Wisła River and the Prądnik's natural habitats.
Simultaneously, the Nowohucki Reservoir is undergoing a biodiversity protection project funded by European Funds for Małopolska 2021–2027. This effort involves cleaning the reservoir floor of accumulated silt, organic matter, and waste using heavy machinery and geotubes. Naturalists are supervising the process to monitor water quality and protect local fish, amphibians, and bird populations. While work progresses, most walking paths around the reservoir will remain accessible to the public.
