Ecologistas en Acción flags coastal pollution in Cádiz and salmon decline in Cantabria

Ecologistas en Acción released its 2026 "Banderas Negras" report for the province of Cádiz, identifying 17 Black Flags and 13 Black Points along the coast. The organization cites untreated wastewater discharges, inadequate sewage treatment, urban development pressure, sand loss, dune system damage and climate‑related threats as the main causes of environmental degradation from Sanlúcar de Barrameda to the Gibraltar area.

In a separate report on Cantabria, the NGO warned that the 2026 Atlantic salmon and eel (angula) fishery captured only three salmon against an authorized quota of 38, describing the season as “demolishing”. It called on the regional government to impose a ban on salmon and eel fishing, citing low river flows, pollution, barriers, illegal fishing and habitat loss as drivers of a potential extinction of the species in the region.

Both reports urge Spanish authorities to adopt stronger protection measures and to address the identified threats to coastal and river ecosystems.
