Overview
Since early June, beach clean‑ups, black‑flag alerts and invasive‑species responses have highlighted mounting pollution pressures along the Iberian coastline. The Mexican Navy’s joint clean‑up and drug‑seizure operation, Spain’s emergency response to invasive Asian algae and the Ecologistas en Acción “Banderas Negras” reports set the stage for a July that brought new challenges. On 8 July, Ecologistas en Acción reported a marine fuel spill coating Palmones beach near Algeciras, threatening the protected Palmones River wetlands and the Zostera meadow that supports diverse bird and marine life. The group urged the Capitanía Marítima to investigate vessel debunkering activities and to organise a thorough cleanup. The following day, activists staged a protest at L'Almadrava beach in El Campello after the site received a black flag for chronic sewage contamination, demanding completion of delayed sewer‑upgrade works. On 13 July, municipalities on the Cádiz coast warned that renewed invasions of the non‑native alga Rugulopteryx okamurae have again overwhelmed local services. Rota alone removed more than 3,400 tonnes of algae, with peak daily removals exceeding 200 tonnes, prompting calls for additional regional and national assistance. On 28 July, the Cantabrian government declared an emergency on Trengandín beach in Noja, removing 230 tonnes of Rugulopteryx okamurae with tractors and loaders at a cost exceeding €600,000 and seeking reimbursement from the national state. In the Valencian town of Denia, new regulations limit the removal of posidonia seagrass to designated urban zones and specific periods, sparking complaints from residents who say accumulated plant material and odors are harming the beach. Later in July 2026, municipal crews in Gijón used a tractor to clear accumulated invasive seaweed from Arbeyal beach, prompting mixed local reactions about the algae’s natural role versus the desire for deeper cleaning.
