Economic formalization and local consumption initiatives in Haiti and Benin

In Haiti, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MCI), led by James Monazard, has reported the registration of 19,720 non-salaried traders between December 2024 and October 16, 2026. This initiative aims to structure the commercial sector and improve economic actor identification. During the first nine months of 2026, the MCI recorded 9,006 traders, a 7.7% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Registrations are heavily concentrated in the West Department, which accounts for approximately 67% of the national total, with Delmas and Pétion-Ville leading at the communal level.

In Benin, the Ministry of Internal Commerce has launched the 7th edition of the ‘Month of Consuming Local’ from October 20 to 24, 2026. A mini-fair at the PK3 market in Cotonou features 75 exhibitors showcasing Beninese-made products. The event, themed ‘Consuming local for a profound economic benefit’, seeks to promote economic resilience and sovereignty by encouraging citizens to prioritize domestic goods in food, clothing, and daily resources.
