Local consumption and economic formalization in West Africa
Overview
In Togo and Benin, initiatives have been launched to promote the consumption of locally manufactured and processed goods. In Lomé, Togo, the fifth edition of the Local Products Market opened with a focus on female entrepreneurs in sectors such as cosmetics, textiles, and agri-food. Simultaneously, Benin launched the seventh edition of the ‘Consume Local’ month. This initiative includes a ‘Panier-minute’ challenge in Cotonou to encourage citizens to integrate domestic goods into their daily diets and a mini-fair at the PK3 market featuring 75 exhibitors.
In Benin, these efforts are framed under the theme ‘Consuming local for a profound economic benefit’ to promote economic resilience and sovereignty. Related economic structuring was also noted in Haiti, where the Ministry of Commerce and Industry reported a significant increase in the registration of non-salaried traders, reaching 19,720 between December 2024 and October 2026.
