EU fuel prices rise 23.8% as energy costs surge across Europe

European fuel and lubricant prices for private transport rose by an average of 23.8% year-on-year in August 2026, according to Eurostat. This increase was observed in 26 of the 27 EU member states, with 18 countries recording annual price hikes exceeding 20%. Bulgaria saw the highest increase at 34.5%, followed by Lithuania, Finland, Germany, and France. On a monthly basis, diesel prices rose by 8.3% and petrol by 3.3% across the EU between July and August 2026.

In Romania, petrol prices experienced a significant monthly increase of 6.6% in August. Meanwhile, the value of EU crude oil imports surged by 55.8% during the second quarter of 2026, driven by rising international market prices despite stable import volumes. The United States and Norway remain the primary suppliers of crude oil to the EU.

In the agricultural sector, Romanian barley export prices reached nearly three-year highs, trading at approximately 268 dollars per ton FOB Constanța. This price remains about 35 dollars per ton higher than in the same period of 2025, supported by strong international demand and record export volumes for the 2025/26 season.
