Economic trends show mixed outlook for Dutch workers and savers
Recent data highlights contrasting economic experiences for workers and households in the Netherlands. According to the ADP Research Institute ‘People at Work 2026’ report, Dutch employees report fewer barriers to changing jobs compared to their international peers. Only 23% of Dutch workers feel it has become harder to switch jobs, the lowest share among 36 countries studied, while 30.4% believe job switching has become easier.
However, financial pressures are mounting for many households. An Independer study of 2,000 respondents reveals that nearly half of Dutch citizens are able to save less than they did a year ago. This trend is most pronounced among young adults, with nearly 60% of those aged 18 to 29 and 55% of those aged 30 to 44 reporting a decrease in savings.
Key drivers for reduced savings include rising grocery costs, higher housing expenses, and unexpected financial setbacks. Among those saving less, 55% report a monthly reduction of at least 100 euros, with nearly half of that subgroup seeing a decrease of more than 250 euros per month. The study also notes significant anxiety regarding financial buffers, particularly among younger demographics who fear being unable to cover emergency expenses.
