ECOWAS advances regional market regulation and postal sector reforms

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is advancing regional integration through enhanced market regulation and sector-specific reforms.

The ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA) has issued approximately 30 decisions since October 2024 to combat anti-competitive practices. According to ERCA Council Chair Dr. Juliette Anokye, these decisions follow investigations by the Executive Directorate aimed at protecting consumers and preventing dominant firms from disadvantaging small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) during mergers and market expansions.

Simultaneously, ECOWAS is working to harmonize the legal and regulatory framework of the regional postal sector. A recent workshop in Lomé, Togo, focused on validating a regional directive for postal sector reform. The initiative seeks to modernize the sector, transitioning it from traditional mail delivery to a digital ecosystem supporting e-commerce, logistics, and financial inclusion across member states.
