ECOWAS regional integration and security efforts

Overview

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has focused on strengthening regional integration through regulatory, economic, and security initiatives.

On the economic front, the ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA) has issued approximately 30 decisions since October 2024 to combat anti-competitive practices and protect small and medium-sized enterprises. Additionally, the bloc is working to modernize the regional postal sector, transitioning it toward a digital ecosystem to support e-commerce and logistics.

Regarding regional stability, ECOWAS has reaffirmed its resilience despite insurgencies in the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin and the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the bloc. To address security challenges, ECOWAS signed an agreement in Abuja, Nigeria, with the United Nations to enhance cooperation on disarmament, arms control, and armed conflict prevention.
