ECOWAS and AES initiate cooperation talks in Dakar

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) have commenced formal ministerial negotiations in Dakar, Senegal, to establish a framework for regional cooperation. The meeting, held on October 17, 2026, marks a significant diplomatic step following the institutional split caused by the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from ECOWAS.

The discussions were co-chaired by Senegal’s Foreign Minister Cheikh Niang and Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore. While the two blocs remain institutionally separate, both parties expressed a commitment to relations guided by principles of sovereignty, good neighborliness, and the well-being of their populations.

A key outcome of the meeting is the agreement to establish joint thematic working groups. These groups will conduct technical discussions to develop a cooperation framework agreement, focusing on areas of mutual interest such as trade, security, and the movement of people. The findings of these working groups are expected to be presented to ministers at a future session.
