ECOWAS calls for stronger competition rules to deepen regional integration

The ECOWAS Regional Competition Authority (ERCA) held its inaugural annual conference in The Gambia to address market integration and competition policy across West Africa. ECOWAS Commission President General Birame Diop emphasized that deepening regional integration requires more than just removing trade barriers; it necessitates creating fair and competitive conditions for all economic operators.

During the conference, Gambian Vice-President Muhammed B. S. Jallow announced that the government has allocated land for the ERCA to construct its permanent headquarters in The Gambia. The discussions focused on harmonizing national competition laws, regulating digital markets, and ensuring smaller economies can compete effectively within the single market.

Experts at the event also highlighted the need for robust regulation in strategic sectors such as energy and telecommunications. Regulators were urged to prevent monopolies and ensure transparent, equitable access to essential infrastructure, such as electricity distribution networks and telecommunications systems, to foster innovation and investment across the region.
