ECOWAS implements new communication strategy to bolster regional trust

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has launched its 2026–2031 Inter-Institutional Communication Strategy and Information and Communication Policy. The initiative, introduced during a workshop in Accra, Ghana, aims to improve coordination among regional institutions and enhance public engagement regarding the bloc’s policies and achievements.

This strategic move follows the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the organization, which took effect on January 29, 2025. The departure of these three military-led nations, who formed the Alliance of Sahel States, has created challenges for regional unity and cooperation in security, trade, and human mobility.

Developed with support from the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), the strategy seeks to make regional integration more accessible and relevant to West African citizens. Nigeria continues to play a central role in diplomatic efforts to maintain the cohesion of the bloc.
