ECOWAS promotes regional unity at UN General Assembly
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) participated in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Led by President General Birame Diop, the delegation focused on promoting regional unity, political stability, and deeper economic integration within West Africa.
During the assembly, ECOWAS officials held consultations with high-ranking United Nations leaders, including Vice Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and Jean-Pierre Lacroix, to discuss peace, security, and international cooperation.
Simultaneously, African delegations at the UN General Assembly have emphasized the continent's need for self-governance, control over natural resources, and a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Discussions highlighted the importance of utilizing regional organizations like the African Union to develop homegrown solutions for the continent's challenges, including climate change, rather than relying solely on international aid.
