Ecuador implements electrical maintenance and coastal curfews

Ecuador is implementing emergency measures to address energy instability and security concerns. President Daniel Noboa has announced scheduled electrical system maintenance for October 17, 2026, to prepare infrastructure for the El Niño phenomenon. This maintenance involves investments exceeding USD 2 million in transmission and distribution networks. The move comes as the Mazar reservoir has dropped to approximately 34% of its useful volume due to low rainfall.

Simultaneously, the government is addressing non-compliance with electrical disconnection orders. Secretary General of Public Administration José Julio Neira has requested police intervention to enforce disconnections for medium-voltage clients who remain connected to the national grid, citing risks to residential supply.

In response to rising crime, a new curfew has been decreed for five coastal provinces—Guayas, Manabí, Los Ríos, El Oro, and Esmeraldas—effective from November 1 to 10, 2026. The curfew will restrict movement between 00:00 and 05:00 during the national holiday period to combat organized crime operations.
