Ecuador and Peru issue heat warnings as temperatures peak amid El Niño

Ecuador's National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) has issued Weather Warning No. 52 for the coastal region, forecasting maximum temperatures of 32‑33 °C and a heat index reaching 35 °C in Guayaquil, with UV radiation levels rated "very high" (index 8‑10). Authorities advise staying hydrated, using sunscreen and limiting outdoor exposure between 10:00 and 15:00.

In Peru, the National Service of Meteorology and Hydrology (Senamhi) warned that up to 36 °C could occur in 19 regions, from the northern coast to the highlands, as the El Niño phenomenon, with a 99 % likelihood of affecting the country, continues. The extreme heat threatens agriculture, fisheries and wildlife, including Humboldt penguins and anchoveta stocks, and could persist through April 2027. The agency highlighted potential impacts on food supply and coastal ecosystems.
