2026‑27 El Niño intensifies, impacts widen globally
Overview
NOAA estimates an 81 % chance that the 2026‑27 El Niño will become very strong by Oct‑Dec 2026 and persist into early 2027, raising global risks of extreme heat, heavy rain and drought. In the United States, storm tracks are shifting toward the southern Plains, Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard, extending travel‑delay hazards into March. Humanitarian alerts focus on East Africa and South Asia, with Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan flagged for flooding, disease, drought and famine; Kenya has activated its disaster plan and Mogadishu has already suffered repeated floods. The UN has earmarked up to US$100 million from its Central Emergency Response Fund, adding to a prior US$20 million allocation. In South America, Peru faces intense rain in inter‑Andean valleys and the coastal Arequipa area, threatening flash floods, landslides and river overflows; the Piura region could incur damages of roughly S/ 3.5 billion. Marine temperatures 2‑5 °C above normal have cut fisheries output by 31 % in the first five months, jeopardising $5 billion of export earnings, while agricultural export losses may reach $1 billion. Congress approved a $2.8 billion budget for infrastructure and emergency works, and the Áncash regional government allocated over 7 million soles for flood response. The olive sector in Tacna could lose more than 80 % of production, and a potato pest in the Cañete valley forced destruction of ten hectares, costing about S/ 20 000 per hectare. Argentina’s Gran Chaco region warns of altered evaporation and wind patterns that could affect the Pilcomayo, Bermejo and Paraguay basins. In Australia, engineers are upgrading designs for hotter, drier summers, adding passive cooling, reflective materials and urban greening to curb bush‑fire risk and water‑energy strain.
