Ecuadorian diplomacy leads OAS Council and regional security pacts

Ecuadorian Ambassador Mónica Palencia has assumed the presidency of the OAS Permanent Council for the final quarter of 2026. During her inauguration in Washington, D.C., Palencia introduced the 'nexo' methodology, an analytical approach designed to foster understanding of fundamental concepts between member states to facilitate consensus on regional issues.

In a separate diplomatic effort, the legislatures of Ecuador and Colombia signed a joint parliamentary declaration in Madrid during the XII Ibero-American Parliamentary Forum. This agreement aims to harmonize anti-mafia laws and coordinate efforts against transnational organized crime and drug trafficking, specifically focusing on border control, operational capacity, and combating money laundering.

Additionally, Ecuador and the United States have formalized the 'Police Integrity 360' project. This technical cooperation initiative is designed to strengthen internal police controls and reduce corruption or criminal infiltration. The plan includes mandatory polygraph, psychological, toxicological, and financial evaluations for officers, supported by US funding and expertise.
