Ecuador Attorney General contest narrows to five candidates
The selection process for Ecuador’s new Attorney General has reached a decisive stage following resolutions by the Citizen Selection Commission. Out of 26 original applicants, only five remain in the competition after the commission accepted 21 challenges (impugnaciones) against other candidates.
The disqualifications include the two highest-scoring candidates, Daniella Camacho and Inés Maritza Romero. As a result, Carlos Alarcón Argudo, the current acting Attorney General, has moved from third place to the top of the list. The five remaining candidates are Carlos Alarcón Argudo, Mario Fonseca Vallejo, Juan Guaño Costales, Andrea Cazar Villacís, and Patricio Haro Aldean.
Disqualified candidates have three days to appeal the decisions to the Plenary of the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS), which will issue a final and definitive ruling. Once the appeals process is complete, the next stage will involve opposition testing, consisting of written and oral examinations.
