Ecuador Attorney General selection enters resolution phase after impeachment challenges

The selection process for Ecuador’s new Attorney General has moved into a critical resolution phase following the conclusion of public impeachment hearings on October 1, 2026. The Citizens' Selection Commission has two days to issue rulings regarding 41 challenges filed against 26 candidates.

Among the challenges, Hamilton Rickard Taramuel filed objections against four specific candidates: Daniella Camacho, Salomón Alejandro Montecé, Gustavo Adolfo Benítez Álvarez, and Sandra Patricia Morejón Llanos. These objections focused on alleged issues regarding the candidates' probity and suitability based on past legal actions. While Taramuel did not appear in person, he was represented by attorney María Gabriela Sierra.

If a challenge is accepted, the candidate will be disqualified from the competition. Parties involved in the decisions may appeal to the Plenary of the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS), whose decision will be final. Once these resolutions are issued, the commission will submit a final report to the CPCCS before moving into the opposition phase of the selection process.
