Ecuador Attorney General selection faces legal challenges

The selection process for a new Attorney General in Ecuador has entered its decisive final stages. The process involves hearings to address challenges against the candidacies of various jurists seeking to replace Diana Salazar.

Concerns regarding transparency and potential irregularities have emerged during these proceedings. Specifically, there are suspicions that certain challenges may be driven by political or criminal interests disguised as citizen participation. One notable case involves a 19-year-old individual with no legal or prosecutorial experience attempting to disqualify four candidates, including Supreme Court Judge Daniella Camacho. Camacho is currently the highest-scoring candidate and has been noted for her prosecution of corruption cases, including those involving former President Rafael Correa.

The Civic Monitoring Commission is overseeing the hearings to ensure transparency and provide reports to the public.
