Ecuador CNE processes 219 objections for 2026 sectional elections

The Ecuadorian National Electoral Council (CNE) is processing over 53,500 candidacy applications for the upcoming sectional elections on November 29, 2026. As of late August, 219 objections have been filed against various candidates, with the highest concentration of challenges targeting candidates for parish council members and mayors.

A major point of contention involves the disqualification of Luisa González and her running mate, Gabriel Giler, for the Manabí prefecture. The Manabí Provincial Electoral Board denied their registration under the Pachakutik movement, citing a technical report that they failed to meet the requirement of two years of active membership. González has challenged this decision, arguing that the objections were filed improperly by individuals without legal representation and that the movement had the right to invite external candidates.

Currently, 540 candidacies have been officially confirmed across several provinces, including Guayas and Morona Santiago. The electoral process continues as provincial boards review requirements and resolve pending objections to establish the final list of candidates.
