Ecuador TCE suspends Movimiento Amigo, maintaining Revolución Ciudadana ban

On 17 July 2026 Ecuador's Tribunal Contencioso Electoral (TCE) ordered the provisional suspension of the political movement Acción Movilizadora Independiente Generando Oportunidades (AMIGO) for nine months. The decision follows a filing by the state’s acting fiscal, Carlos Alarcón, alleging the movement and its leaders are under investigation for alleged money‑laundering. The suspension removes AMIGO from the permanent register of political organisations overseen by the Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE) and bars it from registering candidates for the seccional elections scheduled for 29 November 2026.

The measure reinforces an earlier ban on the Revolución Ciudadana (RC) movement. In March 2026 the TCE suspended RC, and the Constitutional Court confirmed that ruling on 3 July 2026, rejecting a protection action that sought to lift the ban. RC had attempted to run its candidates through AMIGO as an electoral vehicle; the new suspension now blocks that strategy as well. The TCE said the suspension is precautionary and may be lifted if the investigation is closed or the fiscal withdraws the request.

The suspensions affect the correísm political bloc’s ability to field candidates in the upcoming local elections, forcing it to reconsider its electoral strategy.
