Ecuador egg prices rise amid poultry supply shortage
Egg prices in Ecuador have risen, with large egg trays reaching $4.50 at some retail points. This increase follows a period of low prices between November 2025 and February 2026, which prompted producers to reduce their poultry numbers.
Industry estimates suggest that between 3 and 4 million laying hens were removed from production during that period, reducing the total flock from approximately 17 million to between 14 and 15 million birds. While replenishment of flocks began in March and April 2026, the impact on supply is delayed because hens require roughly five months to reach the egg-laying stage.
Several factors are contributing to the higher costs, including reduced supply, the cost of corn and soy, transportation expenses, and exports to Peru.
