Egg price volatility and agricultural crisis in Latin Am

Overview

Egg prices have been rising across several Latin American markets, driven by increased production and supply chain costs. In Honduras, Tegucigalpa previously saw increases of approximately 14 lempiras per 30-unit carton due to high fuel prices, rising production costs, and a shortage of laying hens.

In response to these pressures, the Honduran government and poultry sector representatives reached an agreement to reduce egg prices. Under this arrangement, egg cartons were to be sold for 95 lempiras at Banasupra stores nationwide and 104 lempiras at the Mercado Zonal Belén. However, recent data indicates that the price of a 30-unit carton of eggs has surged by approximately 40% over a three-month period, rising from roughly 85 lempiras in June to between 118 and 120 lempiras in Tegucigalpa markets. This spike is forcing low-income families to reduce protein consumption.

This volatility is compounded by the depreciation of the lempira against the US dollar. The exchange rate is approaching 27 lempiras per dollar, with projections from the Foro Social de Deuda Externa y Desarrollo de Honduras (FOSDEH) suggesting it could reach 30 lempiras by the end of 2026. As Honduras relies heavily on imports, this currency shift is expected to increase the costs of fuel, medicine, and agricultural inputs.

Elsewhere in the region, Ecuador has seen 30-egg cartons rise from $3.50 to as much as $4.50, while in Mexico, retail prices in Coahuila rose by 27 percent, contributing to a national trend of nearly 8 percent monthly increases.
