Ecuador Election Council Sets Deadline for CPCCS Precandidates to Respond to Complaints

The National Electoral Council (CNE) has given 214 precandidates for the Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS) until Monday to submit their defenses against 286 complaints lodged by members of the public. The complaints allege non‑compliance with constitutional requirements or violations of prohibitions and ineligibilities for public office.

Following the response period, a ten‑member Verification Commission will have 30 days to review the evidence and prepare reports for the CNE plenary, which will then decide whether to accept or reject each candidature. Candidates may appeal the council’s decision within five days, after which the council has three days to rule. Final disputes can be taken to the Electoral Contest Tribunal (TCE). The official list of candidates is expected on 24 September, after which ballot printing will commence.

Among the individuals named in multiple complaints are Xavier Abarca, Óscar Ayerve, María Centeno, Andrés Cevallos, Lizbeth Galarza, Ramiro García, Santiago Porras, and Andrés Fantoni, who is also the CPCCS president and a precandidate.
