Ecuador Electoral Court Orders Restoration of Jorge Yunda's Quito Voter Registration

On 6 July 2026 the Tribunal Contencioso Electoral (TCE) accepted a challenge by former Quito mayor Jorge Yunda, who is a precandidate for the city’s November 29 mayoral election. The court nullified the National Electoral Council’s (CNE) June 23 decision that had listed Yunda’s electoral domicile in Guayaquil and ordered the CNE to correct his registration to Quito, Pichincha province, Centro Histórico, La Victoria parish, within one day.

The TCE ruled that a civil‑address change does not automatically alter electoral domicile and that the change requires an explicit request, which the CNE had not received. The resolution was unanimous among the five judges. Yunda welcomed the ruling, stating “now, to win,” and highlighted the oddity of being registered in Guayaquil despite voting in Quito since adulthood. The decision clears his way to run in the upcoming municipal elections.
