Ecuador electoral court suspends Amigo party, opposition vows alternative alliances

On 17 July 2026 the Tribunal Contencioso Electoral (TCE) suspended the Acción Movilizadora Independiente Generando Oportunidades (Amigo) for nine months after a prosecutor’s complaint alleging money‑laundering by the movement’s directors. The suspension deprives the opposition coalition Revolución Ciudadana (RC) of its primary vehicle for the seccional elections scheduled for 29 November 2026.

RC president Gabriela Rivadeneira said the party will register its candidates through other allied parties before the 18 July deadline. Quito mayor Pabel Muñoz and former president Rafael Correa also announced plans to seek alternative platforms and condemned the decision as political persecution. Correa reposted alleged personal data of judge Juan Patricio Maldonado, intensifying the controversy. The National Electoral Council (CNE) has three days to enforce the suspension, while opposition groups label the move undemocratic and call for domestic and international protest.
