Ecuador implements industrial power restrictions to protect Mazar reservoir
Ecuador is facing a significant energy risk due to low water levels in the Mazar reservoir, a critical component for the country's hydroelectric generation. To prevent residential blackouts during the dry season, the government has implemented a strategy focused on reducing industrial demand.
Minister of Environment and Energy Juan Carlos Blum has announced that approximately 150 to 185 large-scale industrial companies (High Voltage 1 and 2) must reduce their consumption. These companies may be required to suspend operations one day per week or reorganize production schedules through November and December. This measure aims to release between 600 and 1,000 MW from the National Interconnected System.
The government is also calling on residential consumers to reduce their daily electricity use by at least 10%. While the current supply meets residential demand, officials warn that the situation remains precarious due to climate uncertainties and the potential impact of El Niño. Long-term solutions discussed by the Ecuadorian Energy Chamber include incorporating up to 4,500 MW of new capacity and strengthening transmission and storage infrastructure by 2035 to reduce vulnerability to seasonal droughts.
