Ecuador faces political instability and electoral controversy

Ecuador is experiencing significant political turbulence ahead of local elections, which were moved from February 2027 to November 29 due to the El Niño phenomenon. This rescheduling has sparked suspicion that the government intends to disadvantage political opponents.

Several opposition parties and candidates face obstacles. The Revolución Ciudadana party has struggled to register candidates, while other groups like Unidad Popular and Construye have faced uncertainty or withdrawal. High-profile figures, including former presidential candidate Luisa González, have faced legal or administrative barriers to participation. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has called on the country to ensure pluralist political participation.

Concurrently, President Daniel Noboa has declared new states of emergency and curfews in several provinces. Concerns have been raised regarding judicial independence and human rights, including allegations of military non-cooperation in investigations. Additionally, the presence of US forces in joint operations with Ecuadorian police has drawn scrutiny from UN experts regarding potential violations of international law.
