Ecuador former CPCCS councilors seek return to citizen participation council

Three former members of Ecuador's Consejo de Participación Ciudadana y Control Social (CPCCS) have filed candidacies to regain seats on the council ahead of the sectional elections scheduled for 29 November. The ex‑councilors – Rosa Chalá Alencastro, Victoria Desintonio and José Tuárez – were previously removed from office by political and judicial actions between 2019 and 2023, but argue that transparent selection processes are essential for state oversight.

Their applications are among 309 pre‑candidates registered for the seven CPCCS positions. The council, whose members are elected by popular vote since 2018, has been marked by internal conflicts and accusations of politicised appointments. The candidates have pledged to immediately call public competitions for the appointment of key control authorities and to adhere to constitutional limits on consecutive re‑election. The final decision on their eligibility will be made by the Consejo Nacional Electoral (CNE).
