Ecuador health officials warn of flu surge amid El Niño heat

Health experts in Ecuador say the hot, humid conditions brought by the El Niño phenomenon are increasing the risk of influenza transmission as people stay indoors in crowded spaces. The World Health Organization estimates up to five million severe influenza cases worldwide each year. Doctors advise annual flu vaccination, frequent hand‑washing, covering coughs and sneezes, and ventilating rooms to reduce spread.

Typical flu symptoms include sudden fever, chills, sore throat, cough, nasal congestion, muscle aches, intense fatigue and, in some cases, headache or gastrointestinal upset. Vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, young children and people with chronic illnesses should seek medical care promptly if symptoms worsen, especially if they experience persistent fever, difficulty breathing, chest pain or confusion. Treatment focuses on rest, hydration and staying home until recovery, while vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure.

Authorities recommend monitoring heat indices and air quality as part of broader prevention strategies, encouraging the public to adopt protective habits and to consult health services early if serious signs appear.
