Ecuador Minister Nataly Morillo files espionage probe against former President Rafael Correa
On 22 June 2026 Ecuador’s Minister of Government, Nataly Morillo, presented a formal complaint to the Fiscalía General demanding an investigation into an alleged political espionage network operating within the municipal security system Segura EP in Guayaquil. The complaint names former President Rafael Correa and several former officials, accusing them of misusing surveillance cameras, embezzlement, intimidation and other crimes. Morillo said the system was funded by Guayaquil residents to fight crime, not for political surveillance, adding, “Los guayaquileños han aportado recursos para que este sistema sirva para combatir la delincuencia y no para otros fines.” The ministry seeks to determine whether the cameras were used to monitor political opponents and to hold any responsible parties accountable.
