Ecuador: Multiple fatal shootings reported in Quito and Guayaquil

A wave of violent incidents across Ecuador has resulted in multiple fatalities in Quito and Guayaquil. In Quito, a ride-hailing driver was shot and killed in the La Ecuatoriana sector after attempting to resist a robbery by individuals posing as passengers. The driver's younger brother was also brutally assaulted during the attack.

In Guayaquil, two separate violent events occurred on August 27. In the Nueva Prosperina district, a 17-year-old student was murdered after leaving school. Police are investigating a hypothesis that the teenager was targeted by an organized crime group after refusing to join their ranks.

Additionally, a shooting near the Jardines de Esperanza cemetery in northern Guayaquil left three people dead and two injured. Attackers in a van opened fire on individuals attending a funeral procession. Authorities believe the incident may have been a planned retaliation between criminal factions. In the Zone 8 region, which includes Guayaquil, authorities have recorded 641 murders since the beginning of the year.
