Fatal violence continues to affect Ecuador. In Guayaquil, two men were killed in Mapasingue Este, a location noted as a “frequent site for executions.” Other incidents include the deaths of two students in Daule and a ride-hailing driver in Quito. In September 2026, violence surged in Guayaquil with seven murders in 24 hours, including a tricycle driver and a residential attack involving gunmen by boat. In Cañar, Judge Ramón Abad was killed in a motorcycle ambush.

Throughout late September and October 2026, targeted attacks persisted. In Guayas, Manuel Ezequiel Mora Pinela was shot near Lomas de Sargentillo, and a merchant was killed on the Daule Highway. In Portoviejo, a 15-second raid left one dead, while in Guayaquil, an off-duty police officer was killed in an ambush. Other fatalities included a man shot at a gas station on Portete Avenue and multiple deaths in El Oro province, including a shooting in Machala that killed three people.

Statistical data highlights a deepening crisis. In the first eight months of 2026, 430 minors were murdered, with Guayas accounting for nearly half of these cases. Femicide rates are also high; between January and September 2026, 323 women and girls were killed due to gender-based reasons, averaging one victim every 19 hours. While national homicide rates saw a slight decrease, the province of El Oro experienced a 62% increase in murders compared to the first half of 2025.

Recent data indicates a 10.9% increase in emergency calls for physical, verbal, and personal aggressions coordinated by ECU 911 between 2025 and 2026. Aggressions against persons rose from 12,394 to 16,333, the highest level in the recorded series. Despite an 8.1% decrease in national homicide rates, the country faces challenges with structured macro-criminality, including extortion and kidnappings, particularly in Guayaquil, Durán, Samborondón, and Los Ríos.
