Fatal violence in Ecuador and Mexico
Overview
Fatal violence continues to affect Ecuador and Mexico. In Guayaquil, Ecuador, two men aged 27 to 28 were shot and killed in the Mapasingue Este sector. Local residents noted that the location has become a “frequent site for executions,” with five similar cases reported over the previous two months.
In Turicato, Mexico, two unidentified men were discovered on a dirt road with bodies showing signs of physical violence and bruising.
By late August, a wave of violence expanded across Ecuador. In Quito, a ride-hailing driver was shot and killed in the La Ecuatoriana sector while resisting a robbery by individuals posing as passengers; the driver’s brother was also assaulted. In Guayaquil, a 17-year-old student was murdered in the Nueva Prosperina district, potentially targeted by organized crime for refusing to join their ranks. Additionally, attackers in a van opened fire on a funeral procession near the Jardines de Esperanza cemetery, leaving three dead and two injured. Authorities suspect this was a planned retaliation between criminal factions.
On September 4, Guayaquil saw a surge in violence with seven murders in 24 hours across three incidents. Armed men killed two men in the Gallegos Lara and La Florida sectors. In Pascuales, a 19-year-old tricycle driver was killed near a school while transporting children. Finally, gunmen arriving by boat from the estuary attacked a residence in a suburb, killing two men and two women while two children survived.
